In May 1974, Volkswagen presented the first-generation modern car with front-wheel drive, and called it the Golf. The Golf Mk1 replaced production of the Volkswagen Beetle, and later models introduced the GTI hatchback version in June 1976.

The diesel variant came out in September 1976, the sedan version of Volkswagen Jetta went into production from October 1979, and the Golf Cabriolet from January 1980. The Golf Mk1 was sold as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada, and in Mexico as the Volkswagen Caribe. The facelifted version of the Golf Mk1 was produced in South Africa as the Golf Citi from 1984 to 2009.

In the present day versions of these cars still exist and run on the streets. The owners of them are connoisseurs.
