Research regardless of the field always aim to find solutions that lead the way to the future. In December 2011 the automotive future is indicated by the Cross Coupe - concept car brand Volkswagen. This new vehicle is a valuable fuel consumption of only 2.7 l/100 km, equivalent to 62 g / km CO2. Illustrated technical approach applied in SUV car can be extremely fuel efficient, although high performance system for all-wheel drive.

This latest hybrid concept is powered by two electric motors and turbo petrol engine with direct fuel injection, which when combined give a fuel economy of nearly 1.8 l/100 km. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of only 46 g/km.

The power that drives 1.858 kg is 302 horsepower. Within the MQB, there are certain design parameters that are standardized across the model series and brand, the distance between the throttle and the front wheel axle and mounting position for all drivers. There are also variable parameters which make it possible to optimally tailor a wide variety of models. These include parameters such as wheelbase, track width and wheel size, for example.

Volkswagen says the new Cross Coupe TDI Plug-In Hybrid Concept will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds, 0.5 ticks faster than its gas/electric predecessor. It returns a spectacular 157-mpg rating on the New European Driving Cycle and can travel up to 28 miles on pure electric power, reaching top speeds of 75 mph. With its 14.5-gallon fuel tank, it also has a total theoretical range of 800 miles. As you'd expect, the Cross Coupe is capable of functioning in a variety of modes, from pure TDI where it operates as a conventional front-drive package to pure EV where it uses only the aft motor to drive the rear wheels. The controller unit in this super-efficient VW can instantly switch the engine off or couple/decouple the motors to increase efficiency. It also features a "Boost" mode that engages all three power units for maximum performance as well as an all-wheel drive "Off-road" mode in which the front motor draws its energy from the TDI engine and simultaneously serves as a generator to provide electric power to the rear motor.

In pure electric driving mode, the E-motors are supplied with energy from the lithium-ion battery, which consists of eight individual packs. The battery has an energy capacity of 9.8 kWh, and is located in the center of the car. Power electronics that operate at a voltage of about 370 volts are integrated in the front engine compartment, managing the flow of energy from the high-voltage battery and electric motors. Meanwhile, 12 volt power is supplied to the electrical system via a DC power converter located in the center console.

The battery can be charged by a standard external power supply with a 230 volt connection, or by using the brake assist in conjunction with the gas engine.  The driver can manually switch to charging mode by pressing a key lever to shift gears, which then charges the battery through the TDI engine while driving. The driver can choose between different driving modes: City (eco-mode with minimal fuel consumption), Sport (high and performance), OFFROAD (continuous all-wheel drive), E-mode (pure electric driving mode) or EV-EV-Sport. VW Cross Coupe is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels, and 265/45 R20 tires.
