Proton is a Malaysian carmaker based in Subang Jaya and Shah Alam - Malaysia. The company was established in 1983 under the leadership of former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Based on technology and parts supplied from Mitsubishi Motors, production of the first model Proton Saga began in September 1985. Initially the components of the car were entirely manufactured by Mitsubishi, which has gradually been changed with the development of technology and skills. The old brand logo (with a crescent moon, star and fourteen beams) was used till the year 1990, and then the logo replaced by the new logo Proton, which depicts the head of a tiger.
In 1993, Proton is the only car manufacturer in Malaysia to the creation of their sworn enemy and rival Perodua. The brand is a key member of the holding company Proton Holdings Berhad. Over 42% of the equity is owned by the government company, Khazanah Nasional Berhad. For more than a decade after its creation, this share is jointly owned by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation, as they do not sell it.
Proton Waja (Proton Impian in UK), which was launched in early 2001, is the first car model designed independently by Proton. With the acquisition of Lotus technologies in 1996 from ACBN Holdings (a company owned by Volkswagen), Proton received an additional source of engineering and automotive experts. This led to the production of Proton Gen-2 with the code name Wira Replacement, Model WRM. In 2007, Proton launched the new sedan to replace the version Wira, but with a new name, Persona, which has already been used as a name for models sold outside Malaysia. Proton Saga, the model codenamed Proton BLM launched on 18 January 2008.
Proton reenter into negotiations with Mitsubishi Motors. As a result, of these negotiations are due to the change of Waja, based on the Mitsubishi Lancer and the emblem of Proton Persona and Proton Exora Mitsubishi in certain markets. From 1985 to 2008, Proton has sold over three million vehicles. Proton exports cars to the United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia. The company aggressively markets its vehicles in several other countries, including the Middle East. Furthermore, Proton also export a small fraction of their cars to Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Cyprus and Mauritius.
