Lights for Cars

Headlights are an essential and very important part of automotive lighting.

The first lights were introduced in 1880, working with acetylene lamps that were resistant to wind and rain. The first electric lights were introduced in 1898. In 1912, Cadillac integrated their vehicle with a Delco electrical ignition lighting system. This was one of the first modern electrical systems used in a vehicle. In 1935, a light system with cornering function was introduced, allowing the lights to change the direction of illumination when turning the steering wheel of the car. The first halogen lamps were introduced and used in vehicles in 1962.

Halogen technology increases light output to the car and improves driving visibility in fog and snow. Some countries banned the use of halogen lamps in automobiles, while others are allowed only under special conditions. High Intensity Discharge HID Xenon systems were introduced in 1991 with the BMW 7-series. Some countries require vehicles to be equipped with automatic daytime running lights (DRL) or LED daytime running lights, which commonly come as standard equipment in modern Audi brand cars.
