Airbag - Cars

Airbags are a safety device .. This is to protect the driver and passengers, consisting of a flexible envelope designed to inflate rapidly during an automobile collision, protecting them from hitting interior objects, such as the steering wheel, dashboard or window. Modern vehicles may contain multiple airbags located in different areas of the car.

They can be placed in many places around the passengers, such as the steering wheel, instrument panel, doors, door speakers, side of seat and ceiling. Most airbags are triggered by the sensor that senses the severity of an impact. Airbags are designed to be activated by sensors, from mild to severe accidents. Airbags were first introduced in passenger cars in 1970.

Airbags entered the market with great success in the late 80s and early 90s, when cars started to include four or more airbags. Different manufacturers have used different terms for airbags over time. General Motors released the first system on the market as Air Cushion Restraint System (ACRS).

Other automakers have used the terms Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR). These systems are passive and active. Some airbags are passive and can be triggered by sensors in the passenger seat belt. Side airbags are triggered by a pressure sensor.
