Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH is a German manufacturer of luxury automobiles. Car brand was established in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son. It is a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH known as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH. Presently the premium car brand is owned by Daimler AG based in Stuttgart. Tognum AG is headquartered in Friedrichshafen and manufactures commercial Maybach diesel engines MTU brand through its subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH.

Maybach has historic roots during the involvement of Wilhelm Maybach, who was the Daimler technical director until he left in 1907. In 1909, he founded the new company, Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH, with his son Karl Maybach. In January 1912 renamed Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH. The company originally developed and produced petrol and diesel engines for Zeppelins, and then rail cars.

Maybach Mb IVa is used in aircraft during the First World War. In 1919 created an experimental car, which two years later was shown at the auto show in Berlin. Between 1921 and 1940, the company produced various classic vehicles. The company also continues to produce heavy diesel engines for marine and rail equipment.

After World War II, the factory performed some repair work but never restarted car production. Twenty years later, the company was renamed MTU Friedrichshafen and purchased in 1960 by the company Daimler - Benz. In 1997, Mercedes-Benz presented at the Tokyo Motor Show concept luxury car under the name Mercedes-Benz Maybach powered by a V12 engine with 5987 CC and an output of 550 HP.

Mercedes-Benz decided to develop a single market under the brand name of Maybach. Maybach was revived as a brand in early 2000, with production of two new models - Maybach 57 and Maybach 62.
