Automatic transmission

Automatic transmission is a type of transmission used in motor vehicles. It allows for automatic change of the transmission ratios as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from the manual shifter. Most automatic gearboxes are similar to eachother.

Often automatic transmission have a parking feature that blocks the transmission's output shaft. Similar but larger gearboxes are used in heavy equipment, commercial and industrial vehicles.

Some machines with limited speed range or fixed engine speeds, such as some small engines and lawn mowers, only use a torque converter to provide variable use of the engine to the wheels.

Despite superficial similarities to other transmissions such as manual and semi-automatic variables, automatic gearboxes differ significantly in internal operation and work.

The automatic transmission uses a torque converter instead of clutch to manage the connection between the transmission gears and engine.

Conventional manual gearbox is standard equipment in vehicles. New vehicles can be sold with optional automatic transmission and conventional automatic, semi-automatic, or CVT gearboxes.
