Chassis for vehicles and suspension

The chassis of the vehicle covers all the important systems located beneath the car's body. These systems include components such as the load bearing structural frame that supports the engine and the body of the car.

All these elements arranged in order are supported by vehicle suspension, brakes, shock absorbers, springs and some truck springs and airbags, which support the weight of the vehicle absorb the load caused by bumps in the road.

Other systems included in the undercarriage of the vehicle are: steering, which allows the driver to guide and direct the vehicle in the desired direction. Wheels are also elements of the chassis. These are components that allow the vehicle to move with a good grip on the road.

The suspension is a major and important system in vehicles. For each type of car or truck, suspensions are different, but the basic function is the same. Today's suspension systems of vehicles are based on a few basic designs. Coil springs are the most common in the suspension of cars and light trucks.

Chassis springs are designed to absorb the movement of the wheels. Leaf springs consist of several cross sheets of metal interconnected to act as one. Portfolios are used mostly in American cars starting around 1985. They are still used today in most trucks and RVs.

Another twist bar design uses the properties of a twisted steel strip. One end of the bar is attached to the frame of the vehicle and the other end acts as a lever that moves perpendicular to the torsion. European car makers used this system from 1950 - 1960.

The latest version supplied on motor vehicles have airbags. They consist of a cylindrical air chambers located between the wheels and the body of the car and use the qualities of the pressure of the air to absorb the vibrations of the steering wheel and body caused by the roughness of the road surface.
