The types of glass used in vehicles and their purpose

When car companies place ads on TV, they never forget to mention and praise the new safety features of the car. They rarely mention windshield, rear window and side windows, though. Keep in mind that these windscreens in these vehicles are designed and manufactured a special way for the safety of the driver and his companions.

While automotive glass looks the same way as any other type of glass, it works very differently. In most homes, the windows in each room are made of standard type glass. Once broken, this type of glass breaks into large chunks of sharp pieces that are very dangerous. Vehicles are confronted daily with many potholes and bumps in the road.

Therefore, automotive glass is produced in two different varieties of safety glass to protect the people in the vehicle. The first type is called laminated glass, which is mounted on the windshield. The second type of glass is known as tempered glass, which is used for the side windows and the rear window of the car.

The windshield is lamination by placing a thin sheet of foil between two glass panes joined by heating a pressure. Tempered glass for vehicles gets its strength through a process of heating and cooling. Without these different styles of production and consolidation, car windows would be dangerous for the passengers and the driver of the car.

Laminated and tempered glass have different features, but together they protect people in the car during an accident.
