Parts and components of the exhaust system of the vehicle

This article will go over some of the main parts and components of the exhaust system in vans. Exhaust manifolds are one of those important parts. It is carefully attached by bolts to the cylinder head from the first exit exhaust.

The collectors can be made of mild steel, aluminum, stainless steel or other metal alloys resistant to high temperatures. Another parts of the exhaust system is the oxygen sensor. All modern cars, vans, trucks and other systems with fuel injection use an oxygen sensor to measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust.

With this information, the computer knows when to increase or reduce the flow of fuel to get the correct mixture for maximum fuel economy. The oxygen sensor is mounted in the exhaust manifold or near the exhaust pipe. Catalytic converters, or as we call it “the catalyst”, converts harmful emissions created during the combustion process in the engine.

This combustion forms carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and the catalyst turns them into water vapor and carbon dioxide. Some catalysts also reduce harmful nitrogen oxides. Catalysts are installed in the exhaust system between the exhaust manifold and muffler. Exhaust pipes connect all parts of the system such as manifolds, front muffler, catalytic converter, the average exhaust, rear exhaust and silencer.

Exhaust pipes are usually made of mild steel, but can be made of stainless steel which is corrosion resistant and has a longer life. Some exhaust pipes are made from aluminized steel which is more resistant to corrosion than ordinary steel and is better than stainless steel.

Aluminized steel is less expensive than stainless steel. The last part of the exhaust system is the muffler. Mufflers, as the name suggest, help reduce the noise made my exhaust gases. Remember that the combustion process is a series of explosions that create noise. Know that the greatest enemy of the exhaust system of the vehicle is rusting.
