Application of airbags

Airbags are a kind of automotive safety device like seat belts. When triggered, the airbags get pumped with gas and expand. Airbags can be embedded in the steering wheel, instrument panel, doors, roof and seats of your car or truck.

To be deployed, airbag crash sensors need to be triggered, which causes rapid expansion and thus occupants can be protected from more serious injuries. The first airbags came out in 1950, but the first successful electromechanical sensor for an airbag system was introduced in 1968.

During the seventies, they were introduced in Ford, Chevrolet, Oldsmobil, Buick and  Cadillac models. The massive use of air bags as an option for additional equipment on cars and trucks began after 1980. Airbags are of two types - front and side.

Front airbags automatically determine what level of power to be activated and inflated. Appropriate force for blowing the airbag is based on the information the shock sensor sends. This sensor is usually located near the passenger side seat belt.

Airbags for side impacts are designed to help protect the head and chest in the event of a serious shock to the side of the car or truck.
